About The Copperbelt Museum

Background: The Copperbelt Museum was established in 1962 by a steering committee of civic and mine leaders. The goal was to establish a living museum thus a gallery of natural history with emphasis on ecology, geology, mining and local history.

Geology gallery

The gallery takes the visitor through the geological evolution of the earth as well a trip through the geological time. The gallery also describes rock formation through the rock cycle.

Displays an array of material cultures of the peoples of Zambia and how these people have through time harnessed and utilized the resources of their environment to express art, religion, technology, economy, and socio-cultural organization.

The library has a good collection of books to topics related to geology, mining, ethnography and history. The museum provides the facilities for people undertaking research, on internship and distance learning.

Education

The museum has a responsibility of disseminating information about the cultural and natural heritage of the people and this task is achieved through the education department.

The National Museums Board of Zambia is a statutory body created through an Act of Parliament, Chapter 174, of the Laws of Zambia with the principal role of collecting, documenting, preserving and presenting Zambia’s movable heritage for public benefit, education and enjoyment.
